Interview with Writer

"Josh Haney"

°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°

Today we welcome Josh Haney. Josh is a Writer out of Colorado who also writes for "Hacker's Source".

•  My first question for you is to tell me what "Evil Cheerleader Productions" is all about?

Evil Cheerleader Productions is a Colorado based clearinghouse for all things horror. We (my wife Jodi, our girlfriend Almaz, and I) run a horror culture museum in the vein of Forrey Ackerman or Bob Burns, collecting anything and everything horror related so that future generations will be able to view horror culture. We also make films, do music with our bands Crackula (now defunct) and The Nightmare Factory, and of course the writings of Josh Haney. Basically Evil Cheerleader is an umbrella for all of the horror related projects we have going on.

• How did you get started with "Evil Cheerleader Productions"?

We started Evil Cheerleader in 1997 as a way to make independent horror films. We then decided to branch off and use the Evil Cheerleader Name for any horror project we were doing. The company has been going ever since.

• Tell me about yourself?

I'm a horror nerd, plain and simple. I live and breathe horror films and horror culture. My wife and girlfriend are the same way. We are just one big horror geek family. Everyday is Halloween around our house. I spend all of my time watching horror films or writing. I love to read everything from children’s horror like Goosebumps to Splatterpunk authors and everything in between. When I'm not doing any of those things I'm working on the museum collection, which at times seems like a full time job itself.

• Who was your inspiration to become a writer?

Edgar Allen Poe was my biggest inspiration. I grew up in Baltimore, where Poe's house is located and he is buried. I use to spend a lot of time hanging out at Poe's grave, and reading his stories. It only seemed natural for me to try and become a writer like Poe.

• You’ve been a horror writer for some time now, about how long as it been?

I've been writing since I was in 5th grade. Back then it was silly ghost stories with a friend of mine that we would share with each other. I also wrote a lot in high school, again mostly science fiction and horror stories. In 2002 I wrote a story entitled Meeting the Grey's which was published in Hacker's Source magazine. Since then I have released a book, The Horror Of It All, through Eve Blaack Publishing, had two stories picked up for another book entitled Tales Of Madness And The Macabre, and been a staff writer for Hacker's Source and a contributing writer to Gorehound magazine.

• Who would be your favorite horror writer?

Thomas Ligotti holds a very special place in my heart, but my all time favorites are Edgar Allen Poe and HP Lovecraft.

• Are there plans for any upcoming projects?

My band, The Nightmare Factory, has a track on the upcoming Evil Cheerleader Presents cd I Think Of the Demon-A Horrorpunk Tribute to Roky Erickson. Evil Cheerleader is releasing this album as a benefit to the Godfather of horror rock and the proceeds will go to the TRUSTROKY foundation. I'm also working on putting out another book, though I have no title for it at this time. Other than that, more writing, both fiction and staff work for Hacker's Source, and who knows what else may come to pass.

Please note: Evilcheerleaders is not Josh's site nor his work.
